【Security News】 NTP used to amplify DDoS attacks

Dear Valued Customers,

Thank you for using Tsukaeru.net

Recently, DDoS amplification attacks has increased by NTP(Network Time Protocol).

Please see this following notice.

Alert regarding DDoS attacks leveraging the monlist function in ntpd

http://www.jpcert.or.jp/english/

There is a possibility that a server may be used to participate in a DDos attack with the proper security precautions.

We strongly recommend to take appropriate security measure as outlined below.

 *DDoS attack

Short for denial-of-service attack, a type of attack on a network that is designed to make a network or server inaccessible by flooding it with useless traffic. Many DDoS attacks, such as the Ping of Death and Teardrop attacks, exploit limitations in the TCP/IP protocols. For all known DDoS attacks, there are software fixes that system administrators can install to limit the damage caused by the attacks. But, like viruses, new DDoS attacks are constantly being dreamed up by hackers.

■Target:

Customers who use a Dedicated server.

 ※Attention※

・Customers who use Windows VPS for FX since February, 2011 does not affect DDos              attack.

・Customers who use shared server does not affect on this issue.

Security measure has already done by Tsukaerunet.

・Customers who use VPS does not affect on this issue except who customize VPS as a NTP server.

* The server which contains VPSs manages NTP, so VPS does not need to use NTP, and usually customers can not use it except customers who customize VPS as a NTP server.
